City of Tshwane, MerSETA and Samsung partner to-provide skills for employability

Tshwane North TVET College opens Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Academy

Temba, Pretoria, 15 April 2016 – The City of Tshwane in partnership with MerSETA and Samsung Electronics South Africa today launched an Electronics, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Academy at the Tshwane North TVET College, Temba Campus in Pretoria.

The Academy will provide technical training to learners in an effort to provide skills training, as well as new career and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Learners will be trained by facilitators at the Tshwane North TVET College at no cost. Funding of learners will be at the discretion of merSETA and based on the availability of funds.”

Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Executive Mayor of Tshwane, says the Academy will help to ensure that South Africa is training the artisans needed to successfully implement the country’s strategic infrastructure projects, as outlined in our National Development Plan (NDP).

“At present the country is producing on average 13,000 qualified artisans per year which is less than half of the 30,000 artisans that we need to produce per year by 2030,” says Ramakgopa. “In order to achieve such substantial growth, we require sustained commitment by all key stakeholders and the Samsung Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Academy will go a long way to demonstrate this.”

Pitso Kekana, Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Citizenship at Samsung South Africa concur, adding: “The Department of Higher Education and Training has identified an increased need for skilled and qualified artisans in all disciplines to sustain industries and support economic growth within South Africa. For Samsung, our goal is to reach a point where most of our products in Africa are developed on the continent, and the starting point for this is to offer access to the necessary training. This is why we are so excited to be launching the Academy.”

The first 40 students have already been identified and been awarded their study grants – and this number is expected to rise over the next year. Mr. Sello Sethusha, Acting principal at the Tshwane North TVET College says “the Academy is going to positively impact through expanding on the College’s offering and on the community of Temba and Hammanskraal in that it will not only contribute to alleviate unemployment and poverty but also create jobs and contribute to the socio economic development of the Tshwane Metropolis”

The Academy is accredited by merSETA, meaning that students will graduate from the course with a recognised qualification. Dr Raymond Patel, merSETA’s Chief Executive Officer says: “Our partnership with the City of Tshwane, Samsung and the Tshwane North TVET College helps to address the shortage of an important skill in a credible way. We hope to promote further partnerships of this nature, to enable us to respond with quality training and development.”
